Article Title: Effect of oral administration of tormentil root extract (Potentilla tormentilla) on rotavirus diarrhea in children: a randomized, double blind, controlled trial

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of tormentil root extract (TRE) for treatment of rotavirus diarrhea in children. BACKGROUND: Rotavirus, one of the most widely spread pathogens of acute, dehydrating diarrhea in children, is estimated to cause >800 000 annual deaths of young children in developing countries. Currently no rotavirus vaccine is available. Management involves rehydration therapy. Available antiperistaltic or antisecretory drugs to reduce the severity of diarrhea can cause serious side effects in children. METHODS: A randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at Children’s Hospital for Infectious Diseases #3, St. Petersburg, Russia in 40 children ranging in age from 3 months to 7 years with rotavirus diarrhea. We constructed 2 groups for comparison: a treatment group that consisted of 20 children treated with tormentil root extract; and a control group of 20 children who received a placebo. All patients received 3 drops of tormentil root extract or placebo per year of life, three times daily until discontinuation of diarrhea, or a maximum of 5 days. An objective method was used to evaluate diarrhea, and physical examination was used to assess degree of dehydration in children. RESULTS: The duration of diarrhea in the tormentil root extract treatment group was 3 days, compared with 5 days in the control group (P < 0.0001). In the treatment group 8 of 20 (40%) children were diarrhea-free 48 h after admission to the hospital, compared with 1 of 20 (5%) in the control group (P < 0.0001). Subjects in the treatment group received smaller volumes of parenteral fluids than subjects in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of tormentil root extract in controlled doses shortened the duration of rotavirus diarrhea and decreased the requirement for rehydration solutions. Tormentil root extract appears to be an effective measure to treat rotavirus diarrhea in children.

Article Title: Determination of acute toxicity of the aqueous extract of Potentilla erecta (Tormentil) rhizomes in rats and mice

Abstract: Potentilla erecta, the tormentil, and its rhizome extracts have been known for a long time in traditional medicine as a remedy for the treatment of inflammations, wounds, and gastrointestinal disorders. Tormentil rhizomes have also been used as part of alcoholic beverages in Germany, the Ukraine, and Russia. Acute toxicity of an aqueous P. erecta rhizome extract was evaluated with a single dose administered by the intragastric route to rats and mice in dosages of 2.5 g/kg and 6.8 g/kg of body weight, respectively. Further, a single dose of this extract was applied intraperitoneally to rats and mice in dosages of 3.8 and 14.5 g/kg of body weight, respectively. After an observation period of 2 weeks after intragastric administration and 3 days following intraperitoneal administration, no mortality or any changes in appearance, behavior, or body weight occurred for both rats and mice in the high dosages mentioned. Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the internal organs of these rodents revealed no pathological changes. The data are in line with the long-time traditional use of P. erecta rhizome extracts and results from recent clinical trials in which no signs of any toxic effects have been known after the administration of a P. erecta rhizome extract for the treatment of ulcerative colitis in adults and rotavirus-induced diarrhea in children. Thus P. erecta rhizome extracts should be considered safe with respect to acute toxicity when applied to humans.

Even if everyone is not yet aware of the benefits of using ADHD vitamin supplements, it has now been proven beyond a doubt that they are of real help for those children who are suffering from Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It should, however, be remembered that ADHD has to be tackled in various ways that include medication, behavioral therapy, diet and nutrition and last but not the least, helpful parents and teachers.

ADHD occurs due to malfunctioning of the brain. As whatever we eat affects our brain, it is imperative that we give our children a diet with high protein and low carbohydrate so that their brains are able to function normally. As this is not always possible, using ADHD vitamin supplements is the best alternative option. There are several ADHD vitamin supplements that are much better to use than some ADHD medications that cause adulthood depression or other problems. One must not rule out the possibility of prescription and substance abuse either. Let us have look at some vitamins and supplements that can help people with ADHD.

Studies have revealed that Vitamin C is highly helpful for ADHD children. If they are given a mixture of flaxseed oil and Vitamin C, a significant improvement in impulsivity and hyperactivity can be noticed. The Vitamin B complex is another group is also good for ADHD kids. This group includes Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin and Folic Acid among others. Vitamin B is helpful because it plays a major role in helping us to extract energy from any food we consume. So a good B complex vitamin is a must among ADHD vitamin supplements. B vitamins are beneficial for ADHD children as they help the brain to develop normally and also help in producing the brain chemicals called the serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Among other ADHD vitamin supplements are magnesium and zinc. Children with ADHD have shown remarkable improvement when given the above two supplements. A deficiency in these can lead to depression, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, slow growth as well as mental fatigue. Iron also has a key role in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain and it helps in the regulation of the dopamine, a neurotransmitter. Norepinephrine and gamma aminobutyric acid are the other essential neurotransmitters that manage the chemical functions of the brain. If there is a reduction in the levels of iron, learning and behavioral difficulties could occur. L-carnitine has been also found to have a positive effect on ADHD kids, improving their attention span and reducing aggressive behaviors. However, it must always be taken with food lest it causes a stomach upset.

If these ADHD vitamin supplements are added to children’s diets, the condition of the kids will improve considerably. You can also find some special formulated products for only ADHD children that are safer than many prescription drugs. If you take care to ensure that the children do not get processed foods and eat small regular meals, it will go a long way to treating ADHD in them.

So ADHD vitamin supplements can help children and adults also who suffer from attention disorders.
